Attention CS 1500 Users: Don't Forget to Replace Alarm Monitoring

by Mac Smith

If you're deploying a Nortel CS 1500, you're probably replacing an older switch. When your old switch goes offline, you might be losing visibility of alarms at your important remote sites. You need to plan ahead with a dedicated alarm remote (RTU) that's ready to begin monitoring when you make your switch cutover. Even if you've already made your switch, it's not too late to fix limited visibility problems.

But you do have to be sure that you pick the right alarm remote for the job. Choosing flaky monitoring gear can be almost as bad as having none at all.

We Recommend These 2 RTU's for Your CS 1500 Deployment
To make your job easier, we're recommending 2 RTU's to accompany your CS 1500 deployment: the NetGuardian 832A G5 and the NetGuardian 216 G3. They both have broad feature sets, so you choice will ultimately depend on the alarm capacity you need at your site. Also, keep in mind that there are more than a dozen DPS RTU's for you to choose from if you have a very specific need.

NetGuardian 832A G5 SNMPv3 RTU
With 32 discrete points, the NetGuardian 832A G5 is a higher-capacity, full-featured option for replacing monitoring lost during a switch cutover.

The NetGuardian 832A G5 monitors 32 discrete alarms and 8 analog alarms, pings 32 network elements, controls 8 relays, provides LAN reach through access to 8 serial ports, and reports via SNMP (v1, v2c, or SNMPv3) or DCPX, e-mail, or pagers.

NetGuardian 216 SNMP RTU
With 16 discrete points, the NetGuardian 216 G3 is a medium-capacity option remote alarm monitoring.

The NetGuardian 216 G3 provides exactly the right capacity to manage your small & medium sites. It also has a highly intuitive web interface featuring analog gauges like the one shown below:
