GSM Offers New Remote Site Monitoring Solutions

Network security professionals from around the world will tell you that one of their biggest fears would be a system outage. Damages from power-outages, fires, and floods, to issues regarding remote site security such as theft or loss of peripheral equipment function, all potential problems could lead to wasted time, diminished income, and possibly even a loss of lives in some industries.

Telecom companies, utility services, EMS, and various other organizations rely heavily on their ability to accurately monitor their infrastructure. Technicians are responsible for ensuring a variety of devices are always working. This used to mean having to pay technicians to drive from site to site to physically check and see if everything is in proper working order. In the event of a failure, it wouldn't be known until services were lost, or a person happened to notice an issue while making a routine stop.

With advancements in GSM technology, it is now easy to incorporate wireless network monitoring solutions in situations where connection to your LAN was not plausible. Some examples being a cell-tower in the middle of Montana, a radio signal repeater on top of an apartment building, or even the trunking radio devices inside of an Ambulance. If any one piece of equipment in these settings were to malfunction, without a direct connection to transmit an alarm to the NOC, technicians would be left searching for the issue manually.

Imagine being able to sit in a centralized location and still being able to receive immediate notification in the event of a tower-light outage. You could notify the F.A.A. about the failure, and dispatch a technician to rectify the issue as soon as it happens, instead of having to wait until someone happened to see that the light was off. Using a device such as an external GSM modem or a GSM module that has been incorporated into your RTU hardware already, you would be able to pick up signals from some of the largest communications industries in the area. Take AT&T and T-Mobile for example. These two cellular service providers, combined with their subsidaries, have a network that connects nearly 200 million individuals and is still able to maintain a 99.999% up-time rating. Being able to reliably connect that many people is no easy task, but imagine the capabilities that having your communications transmitted this way. Without the need for costly extra equipment and installation costs involved with running your own lines, cellular communications are a great alternative for remote site monitoring.

For those looking for a reliable remote network monitoring option, GSM technologies are a great opportunity. For more information on the benefits of GSM technologies, feel free to send in an information request to Mac Smith using the form at the bottom of your page.
