Streamline your network with a syslog-enabled RTU

Syslog is a standard protocol for logging event messages. A wide range of devices support Syslog Protocol, and it can be used to log different types of events. This flexibility makes it a popular choice in many networks.

Unfortunately, it can be a challenge to find a quality Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU) that also report Syslog messages to your Syslog server. Most RTUs use telecom/SCADA protocols like SNMP or DNP and don't support Syslog.

The Syslog-capable RTU (like the NetGuardian DIN) reports to the syslog server, just as the other network devices do. If there is an alarm, the server sends a notification to the appropriate contact.

Remember, you can't ignore core monitoring capacity when looking for a Syslog RTU.

You could buy an RTU that reports Syslog messages but doesn't exactly match your desired capacity. If you buy an RTU with too little capacity, you'll be forced to choose what things you won't monitor. If you buy a device with more capacity than you need, you'll pay for analogs or relays that you'll never use - just so that you can have it send Syslog messages.

Alternatively, you could get an RTU that fits your network capacity needs but doesn't send Syslog messages. This won't work, either. While your equipment is being monitored by the RTU, how would you get those alerts? You would have to also purchase a manager or employ someone to monitor the RTU 24/7 to make sure you don't miss any alarms. Those aren't practical options.

What you need is a device that is the best of both worlds. DPS Telecom now offers custom-fit RTUs that are Syslog-capable. Find an RTU that matches your network needs and reports messages to your current Syslog manager. You won't need to buy a master unit just for RTU alarms or a protocol converter. Syslog-capable RTUs, like the NetGuardian DIN and R176N, fit seamlessly into your existing Syslog network.

Use your current Syslog software and queries to analyze and sort data logs from your RTU. This makes alarm trending easy and eliminates the need to train your techs on new tools and equipment.
