Does your Remote Access Device Have These 4 Features?

Are your critical operations left sitting miles away at a remote site you have no remote control over? Do you wish you didn't have to hop in your truck and drive all the way out to your remote site every time there was an issue? Imagine controlling your remote equipment without even leaving your desk.

Industries examples of remote access device applications
Remote access devices are applicable in many industries.

Having remote access to all of your distant sites isn't just a luxury - it's a necessity. The time, effort, and money saved with having remote access to your sites are often overlooked. Don't sit miles away with no control over your entire network - give yourself the power to really control your network visibility.

There are 4 key features you should look for when selecting the right remote access device:

  1. Multiple Control Relay Support
Your remote access device should feature multiple control relays for your serial devices. These ports allow you to connect your individual devices to your remote access device to give you functional control via LAN connection. Look for devices that have at least 8 control relays to support all of your external devices. Control relays give you the power to control devices that are operated by a switch or button, such as lights, generators, or doors.
  2. LAN-based terminal server capability
Look for devices with built-in terminal server functionality so you can access, configure, and reboot all of your remote site equipment without having dedicated circuits. This grants you the control you need to effectively operate your equipment at your remote site.
  3. Local visibility options
You need options when it comes to viewing the status of your remote site and issuing control commands. Look for a remote access device that allows you to control your remote site equipment via your SNMP manager, any web browser, or set automatically. Having multiple interface options for controlling your equipment gives you complete control.
  4. Support for remote power controllers Using an additional power controller grants you control over the power source at your remote site. It can be very frustrating to drive all the way out to your remote site just to do a hard reset on your equipment in the event of things like server jams/freezes. Having a remote power controller gives you the capability of performing hard resets and general on and off functions without having to drive all the way to your remote site.

How do I find the right remote access device for me?
The importance of having control over all of your remote sites is no secret. Having remote control puts the control over your remote sites right at your fingertips - saving you time, money, and effort.

Too many remote access devices have limited features that don't give you the level of control you need. It's really a shame that so many devices limit your capabilities with lackluster features, because when it comes to running your network you really can't cut corners - you need the best.

Picture how easy your job would be if you had total control. Imagine the comfort and peace of mind that comes with knowing you won't have to drive all the way to your remote site just to restart some equipment or tweak some settings. That level of control and comfort can only be reached with a quality remote access device.
