Tutorial: Using Air Flow Sensors to Prevent Network Outages

Have you ever suffered from a network outage because the equipment in your server room or data center shut down due to overheating? Your gear generates a ton of heat, and if you're not careful this heat could cause serious damage.

That's why it's absolutely essential that you manage the temperature of your server room. One of the best ways to keep the temperature of your server room or data center under control is to properly manage air flow. By optimally circulating air flow throughout your server room, you can maximize the effects of your HVAC.

monitoring technology for your computer room environment
By properly circulating air flow throughout your server room or data center, you can prevent your mission-critical gear from thermal shutdowns. Stay on top of air flow management by deploying air flow sensors.

Proper air flow management involves setting up servers into aisles with the servers facing each other. Cooling units are placed behind the aisles and pump cold air below the server racks and into air intakes of the racks. The heat generated by the equipment is pumped out the back and the top of the racks. The hot air is cycled back to the cooling units where it is cooled then circulated again. When done properly, this will maintain an ideal temperature for your gear.

While this system is highly effective, it does feature one critical flaw. If the air flow is disrupted, or one of the cooling units goes out, it won't be long before your gear begins to shut down. You can't afford to wait for your network to go down to know there's a critical failure in your server room.

Monitoring systems help prevent crippling outages
Fortunately, this kind of crisis is easily prevented. The first step to preventing a network outage due to overheating is simply being aware of the threat before it causes any damage. This is done by using air flow sensors and a network monitoring system. With the right monitoring system, you'll be the first to know when there's a serious threat to your equipment.

Consider the following scenario to really understand the true power of using air flow sensors to properly protect your network:

In your mission-critical server room, you've set up a proper air flow management system. One day, one of your cooling units loses power and stops circulating air throughout the server room. Without the proper circulation, the temperature steadily begins to rise. This happens for hours, until eventually the room is simply too hot and your equipment begins shutting down. Another hour passes and you start to receive complaints from your customers about their service being disrupted - it's at this point you realize your servers have gone down.

Temperature just doesn't spike 50 degrees instantly - it rises gradually over a period of time. Imagine if you had an air flow sensor placed in front of each cooling unit. As soon as that unit stopped working, you would have received an alert. You could have dispatched your technicians immediately and they could have restored the unit. Preventing these kinds of outages starts with knowing there's a threat.

What does it take to protect my equipment?
An air flow sensor connected to a remote terminal unit (RTU) can give you this capability. A good RTU can provide you with more than just inputs for an air flow sensor - you can monitor all of the critical environmental conditions in your server room. You can also monitor temperature, humidity, power, motion, or water presence with the right RTU.

Just imagine how much easier your job would be if you always knew about a threat to your gear before it caused serious damage. With this kind of protection you can rest assured knowing that your equipment, and your company, are adequately protected from environmental threats. You'll never be left in the dark again, and that's a great feeling.

Protecting your equipment is a serious issue - and you need a serious solution. That's why I recommend the TempDefender IT. This powerful device is easily rack-mounted and supports up to 8 discrete alarms and up to 16 daisy chained analog alarms. With this capacity you could monitor all of the critical data in your server room. This device also comes with 7x24 first-class tech support and a 30 day risk free guarantee.

All the alarm monitoring systems I make are backed by my no-risk, money-back guarantee. If you buy my equipment and you're not satisfied for any reason during the first 30 days, simply return it for a full refund. If my product doesn't solve your problem, I don't want you to have it."
