How Cypress Communications Improved Distributed Site Visibility With NetGuardian

Cypress Communications, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, needed consistent monitoring for PBX and Internet equipment across a widely distributed network. By deploying DPS Telecom NetGuardian units reporting back to IAM systems at headquarters, the team improved alarm visibility and dispatch responsiveness across multiple sites.

Quick Facts

Industry Telecommunications and broadband services
Company Cypress Communications (headquartered in Atlanta, GA)
Geography/Coverage United States - network distributed in over 150 locations
Primary Challenge Monitor PBX and Internet equipment across many remote locations and route alarms to the right on-call personnel
Solution Deployed Distributed NetGuardian monitoring at sites with LAN reporting to IAM systems at the Atlanta headquarters
Key Result Clear, centralized alarm visibility with escalation-based dispatch for faster response to site issues
Products Used NetGuardian RTUs; IAM systems (central alarm management at HQ)

Client Overview

With headquarters located in Atlanta, GA, Cypress Communications offers total, single source communication solutions. Their advanced network is distributed throughout the US in over 150 locations providing local and long distance services, Internet access, digital television, voice mail and other broadband communication services.

The Challenge

Operating a large, distributed network increases the difficulty of maintaining consistent site visibility. Cypress needed a practical way to monitor critical PBX and Internet equipment at many locations, then ensure alarms were delivered to the correct person without delay.

In addition to monitoring, Cypress facilities supported operations with complete monitoring, backup battery systems and maintenance inventory of critical spare components. The monitoring system had to fit into that operational model and help personnel respond quickly when problems occurred.

The Solution

Cypress Communications implemented the DPS Telecom NetGuardian across multiple sites. Cypress has the single largest deployment of DPS' NetGuardians.

"We created this solution with input from Cypress and now it's a widely used monitoring solution," says Rick Dodd, Western Regional Sales Manager for DPS.

At a high level, the NetGuardian functions as a remote monitoring and alarm reporting unit at each location. It collects alarm conditions from site equipment and forwards those alarms over the network so operators can see issues quickly and take action. For organizations standardizing monitoring across many facilities, DPS Telecom NetGuardian RTUs are designed to provide consistent alarm transport and clear visibility to operations teams.

The use of the NetGuardian allowed Cypress to offer a unique level of responsiveness to their customers and tenants. "It pretty much satisfies all of our basic needs. It receives the alarm and dispatches it to the proper person. If that person doesn't respond, it will go to the next person. It lays it out pretty simple for them," says Linna Zile, systems engineer at Cypress.

How It Fit Into Cypress Operations

In the Cypress network, the NetGuardian's purpose was to monitor PBX and Internet equipment. It then reported through LAN connections to IAM systems located in their Atlanta headquarters.

This architecture supported consistent alarm handling from multiple sites across the US. For teams building a similar monitoring approach, DPS Telecom deployments often follow the same pattern: local collection and reporting at each site, with centralized viewing, dispatch, and escalation at the operations center.

Results

According to Zile, the NetGuardian was deployed in multiple sites across the US and was a very effective monitoring system for their network.

By centralizing alarm visibility and supporting escalation-based dispatch, Cypress improved the ability to identify issues and route notifications to the right personnel. This helped support Cypress' strategic focus on superior customer service while maintaining monitoring protection across their network.

Key Takeaways

  • Standardized monitoring at scale: A consistent site RTU approach helps distributed networks manage alarms across many facilities.
  • Dispatch and escalation matter: Getting an alarm to the right person, with automatic escalation when needed, supports faster operational response.
  • Centralized visibility: Reporting alarms back to headquarters systems supports unified tracking and workflow across sites.
  • Vendor collaboration: Development of the NetGuardian provides an example of how DPS works with a client to deliver the monitoring solution they need.

Industry and Challenge FAQ

What equipment was monitored at Cypress sites?

In the Cypress network, the NetGuardian monitored PBX and Internet equipment.

How were alarms delivered back to headquarters?

Alarms were reported through LAN connections to IAM systems located at the Atlanta headquarters.

Why is escalation-based dispatch important in distributed networks?

When an alarm is routed to the appropriate person and escalates if there is no response, operations teams can reduce delays and keep service-impacting issues from lingering.

When should a telecom provider consider deploying NetGuardian RTUs?

NetGuardian deployments are a fit when many remote locations need consistent alarm collection and centralized visibility, especially where rapid dispatch is part of the customer service strategy.
